1. Introduction

  • History of human evolution → from biological evolution to cultural evolution.
  • Period: Earliest humans (Africa, ~2.6 million years ago) to early farming & societies (~10,000 years ago).
  • Key themes: Origin, tools, subsistence, art, social life.

2. Early Human Evolution

(a) Origin of Humans

  • Fossil & genetic evidence → Africa = cradle of humankind.
  • Early species:
    • Australopithecus (4–1 million years ago).
    • Homo habilis (tool maker).
    • Homo erectus (fire user, Africa → Asia → Europe).
    • Homo sapiens (~150,000 years ago, Africa).

(b) Migration

  • From Africa → Asia → Europe → Australia → Americas.
  • Tools & hunting aided survival in new environments.

3. Stone Age Tools

Paleolithic (Old Stone Age – up to 10,000 BCE)

  • Tools: Hand axes, cleavers, scrapers.
  • Used for cutting, hunting, digging.

Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age – 10,000–8,000 BCE)

  • Microliths (tiny sharp stone tools) → mounted on wood/bone.
  • Fishing, hunting small animals.

Neolithic (New Stone Age – after 8,000 BCE)

  • Polished stone tools.
  • Introduction of farming, pottery, settled life.

4. Subsistence Strategies

(a) Hunting & Gathering

  • Depended on wild plants, animals, fishing.
  • Nomadic lifestyle.

(b) Fire

  • Used for cooking, protection, warmth.
  • Important for community gatherings.

(c) Domestication of Plants & Animals

  • Around 10,000 BCE (Neolithic Revolution).
  • Wheat, barley, rice, sheep, goats, cattle domesticated.

5. Rock Art & Cultural Life

  • Cave paintings → symbolic expression & communication.
  • Famous sites: Altamira (Spain), Lascaux (France), Bhimbetka (India).
  • Subjects: animals, hunting scenes, rituals.
  • Show human creativity & early spirituality.

6. Social Organisation

(a) Kinship & Groups

  • Small bands (20–30 people).
  • Based on kinship ties.

(b) Gender Roles

  • Men → hunting; Women → gathering (but overlapping roles).
  • Both crucial for survival.

(c) Egalitarian Societies

  • No private property or rigid hierarchy in early times.
  • Later, farming → surplus → inequality, chiefs, classes.

7. The Neolithic Revolution

(a) Beginning of Agriculture

  • From hunting–gathering to food production.
  • Fertile Crescent (West Asia) → first agriculture.

(b) Settled Villages

  • People began living in permanent settlements.
  • Example: Jericho (Palestine), Çatalhöyük (Turkey).

(c) Consequences

  • Surplus → storage of grains.
  • Division of labour.
  • Beginnings of trade & social differentiation.
